When I first lived in Maryland nearly 20 years ago, craft beer as a “scene” was in its infancy. Still, we had in Frederick and the region several examples of commercial outfits making a go of it: Brewer’s Alley, Flying Dog, and Dogfish Head, to name a few favorites. They’re all still around, and they’ve been happily joined by hundreds of others.
My mom lives on the Northern Neck of Virginia now–and if you aren’t familiar with this ground, I recommend it for a peaceful escape. On my last visit, I reconnected with several favorites, thanks to Harold’s Beer Stash, and a few serendipitous coincidences. One, the Montross Brewery, is a local concern that we’ll be returning to for years to come.
